NEW YORK (AP) — In the face of a harsh and, in some places, record-breaking storm that dusted the northeastern United States with snow and forced thousands of flights to be canceled, neighbors, government employees, and a formidable railroad snow-clearing machine known as "Darth Vader" rushed to dig out much of the region. However, experts cautioned that another storm might be imminent as the snow drifted northward and tapered off in other places on Tuesday.

Record Snowstorm Hits Northeastern United States, Disrupts Travel and Restores Power Gradually**

Parts of the Northeast received more than 2 feet (61 cm) of snow from Monday's storm, which forecasters are describing as the heaviest in ten years. According to the National Weather Service, more than 3 feet (91 cm) of snow fell in Rhode Island, exceeding snow totals from the Great Blizzard that hit the Northeast in 1978. Roads were starting to reopen by Tuesday morning, mass transit was starting to resume in some towns, and power had been restored for some of the hundreds of thousands of people who had lost it in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Delaware, and Rhode Island. On Tuesday morning, Amtrak canceled a few trains between New York and Philadelphia and between Boston and New York.
